When you open more than one folder in windows explorer,  windows 7 will make use of existing processes.  Although this saves on resources it means if one folder crashes the rest will all crash as well.  You can open a new explorer window to use a new process which will get around this problem.  You can do this by going to computer and hold down the shift key and then right click on the folder you want to open and select "Open in new process"
