Be aware that your google mail account is used across other google services so its not just your mail that is at risk. If you have access to your account you can check who has been accessing it by clicking on the "Details" link next to the "Last Account Activity" at the bottom of the page.
If you want to saveguard your account you can add a mobile number to your account and google will text you when ever you want to recover your account.
If you cant even log in to your acount you can contact google using the links at the bottom of the page. You will need to prove that you own that google mail account by confirming the month and year you opened your account.
