In windows xp there is a service that runs that indexes all of the frequently used files so they can speed up access next time you use the file. As good as it sounds it doesnt work very well and can take up quite a lot of system resources. To disable windows indexing in windows xp click on the start menu > Run and type in services.msc and hit enter. Now scroll down to the Windows Serach Service and double click on the service and select disabled. Now restart your machine
